Think about the amount of time you spend in the office – it’s a lot, isn’t it?
Our office environment is, to all intents and purposes, our second home. For that reason, the space you call ‘home’ needs to be comfortable and it needs to have all the elements that make it somewhere you’re happy to go on a daily basis.
If you think of the office as a work home, that means your desks are your virtual sofa. It means your chairs are your virtual armchairs. The list goes on.
The reason this is all of great importance is that in order for an employee to feel happy and comfortable at work, they need to have a space which doesn’t cause them any aches and pains, somewhere they feel inspired, and they need to have their colleagues around them, to keep up with that all-important team spirit.
When designing an office, that means you need to pay great attention to the type of high quality office furniture you choose.
Out of all the furniture choices you think about, office desks should be the ones you really think carefully about. This isn’t just something to lean on, it’s not something that just looks the part in your space, it’s an employee’s base – as before, it’s their version of an office sofa.
Employees are likely to personalise their desks, perhaps with photos of their family or small trinkets which make them think of home. They’re also likely to feel comfortable at that desk, understanding the space they have to get the job done to a high degree of quality. The way the office looks from where they’re sitting it important too – it’s a sense of familiarity which helps them to feel comfortable, at ‘home’, and therefore settled enough to focus on what they need to do.
A desk gives an employee a sense of identity, somewhere they belong. It’s for this reason that hot desking arrangements aren’t the most popular. This means employees don’t have a desk to call home, and that can cause anxiety and a sense of not feeling comfortable all day long. Of course, the longer an employee sticks with this type of arrangement, the more they’ll get used to it, but do you really want to be responsible for a dip in morale like this?
We know that productivity is linked very closely to morale, so it’s important to ensure that your employees have that space they feel they belong in.
Of course, desks come in all shapes and sizes, makes, models, and designs, and these days we even have the opportunity to stand up at a desk, sitting down when we get tired. Height adjustable desks are a great addition to an office, and give employees a workout at the same time.
If you’re thinking of changing the look of your space, be sure to pay plenty of attention to the area your employees call ‘home’.
